ISLANDS TO GET NEW BUSES, MAINTENANCE UPGRADES

April 23, 2004 – The V.I. government has been approved to receive nearly $1.5 million in federal discretionary funding to improve its public transportation system and has received $1 in Federal Highway Administration funds for the purchase of new buses, according to a Public Works Department release.
"A contractor has been selected to supply the new transit buses for the territory and will begin manufacturing the vehicles upon the execution of a supply contract," the released quoted Public Works Commissioner Wayne Callwood as saying.
The discretionary funding grant represents funds for fiscal years 2002, 2003 and 2004, the release stated. The $1 million represents the FHA's TEA-21 highway funding.
Callwood said in the release that the money from both sources will be used to:
– Purchase medium- to heavy-duty buses for St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John that are compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act.
– Complete the renovation and expansion of bus maintenance and office facilities on St. Thomas and St. Croix.
– Assist in the design and construction of a bus maintenance facility on St. John.
Public Works "has developed a program of projects outlining how these funds will be spent," the release stated. Anyone wishing to offer comment on the proposed spending plan is asked to call Verne R. Callwood, deputy commissioner for transportation, at 776-4844, ext. 260, or Constance Gumbs, senior planner, at 774-1301.
