March 29, 2004 The Friends of the Elaine I. Sprauve Library in St. John will celebrate National Library Week with two events.
The first is a book sale in Cruz Bay Park on April 18, the first day of National Library Week. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
"It's to call attention to the library," Friends president Jim Provost said.
He said that new children's books will be for sale, adding that the Friends will sell them at its wholesale cost.
He doesn't expect all the books to sell, so the remainder will be donated to the library.
The Friends wrap up National Library Week on April 24 with its annual cocktail sip at the Battery. The event runs from 6 to 8 p.m.
Tickets are $30 per person and $50 a couple and will be available at the door, at the library and from Friends board members.
"It's a wonderful social event, and the food is great," Provost said, adding that this is the Friends' only fund-raiser. The money raised helps to pay for magazine subscriptions and other library programs.
He said that St. John restaurants and businesses have agreed to donate the finger foods and beverages.
A steel pan group will provide entertainment.
The Sprauve Library, located in Cruz Bay, is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Provost urged residents to visit the library during National Library Week to see what it has to offer.
"It provides all kinds of services that people are probably not aware of," Provost said.
