Dear Source,
I would like to commend Sen. Louis Hill for his introduction of a bill to maintain Vessup Beach as one of the last undeveloped beaches where Virgin Islanders can enjoy a family outing without being intimidated by a large, corporate hotel setting.
The Virgin Islands has had few forward-looking legislators in recent years. We are desperately trying to play catch up after we let Lindquist Beach slip away.
At last we have a senator who is trying to avoid the same pitfall we stumbled over so recently. It's imperative that we learn from our past mistakes and not be condemned to repeat them.
I would also like to commend Sen. Lorraine Berry for her introduction of a bill to create a setback on all undeveloped beaches. This would allow beaches to be used as the open shorelines act intended: family friendly recreation space for all, residents and visitors alike. There's not much left. Let's act wisely.
