April 15, 2004 – V.I. National Junior Team track and field athletes Juan Robles and Sanny Eugene won bronze medals in Bermuda over Easter weekend at the 33rd CARIFTA Championships.
The 14-year-old Robles, a freshman at Central High School, finished third in the 3,000 meters. This was his first time in the event. He finished with a time of 9:53.88. Desrick Brooks of Jamaica won the event in 9:29.23. Cody Lima of Bermuda was second in 9:31.25.
Robles finished fifth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:32.35.
Eugene, of Education Complex High School, won the bronze medal in the 800 meters with a time of 2:18.87 and one of the best V.I. times in the event in years. Kayann Thompson of Jamaica won the event in 2:08.38. Vanessa Whittle also of Jamaica took second in 2:09.05.
According to a release from the V.I. Track and Field Federation, local athletes Lester Liburd and Calvin Dascent advanced to the semifinals of the 400 meters. Tyfia Lee, Eudora Kean High School, competed in the 200 meters and the 400 meters but did not advance.
Cheynae Rogers, Hounds and Foxes Track Club, competed in the finals of Shot Put (8th) and the Long Jump (14th).
Devon Peters, V.I. national coach, had praise for the athletes' performances. He said they gave their best and added that the Bermuda track and field organization produced the best CARIFTA he has seen.
