April 12, 2004 – A Concordia Village man was shot to death Sunday night by an unknown assailant outside a nightclub described as a troubled spot on Monday by Sgt. Thomas Hannah, Police Department spokesman.
Dean Jones, 28, was on his way back to his car after buying some food from a vendor outside the Front Line Night Club in Estate Calquohoun shortly before 1 a.m. Monday when witnesses heard gunfire, Hannah said.
The killing is the third shooting death on St. Croix in six days. And there have been three homicides at the nightclub in as many years, Hannah said.
Witnesses told police they found Jones on the ground, struggling to get back to his feet. He had been shot in the neck, chest and arm, Hannah said. Witnesses described the assailant as a black male about 4 feet 6 inches and weighing about 140 pounds who drove away in a white vehicle, he said.
Police are not making public how many shots were fired or the type of gun used. Hannah said investigators have not established a motive for the killing or identified a suspect.
On Wednesday night, Francisco Martinez, 44, was shot to death outside a friend's home in Estate La Reine after a fishing trip. Shortly after dawn on Friday, the body of Gibson Polydore, 18, was found outside the Harbour View housing community; he, too, had been shot. Police have no suspects in either case, Hannah said on Monday.
Hannah also said the Police Department plans to focus on the need for community involvement in preventing and solving crimes with a series of town meetings and school presentations that will begin on Wednesday. Police Commissioner Elton Lewis "has put us all on notice that we need to step up our efforts," he said.
Jones's slaying is the sixth on St. Croix this year and the 11th in the territory.
