April 12, 2004 – The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued today has these announcements:

UVI Little Theatre Offers Spring Production April 16-19
The UVI Little Theatre's spring production "The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail" opens Friday, April 16, for a four-night run. Written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, the play offers a historical yet believably current look at the night Thoreau was thrown in jail in 1846 for nonpayment of taxes. The play will feature members of the community as well as UVI students. Show dates are April 16, 17, 18 and 19. Show time is 8 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for students. The UVI Little Theatre is located in the Classroom Administration Building on the St. Thomas campus. Call 693-1354 for details.
UVI Carnival Troupe Sets Practice, Car Wash
The next practice for UVI's 2004 Carnival Troupe will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, at the Dining Pavilion on the St. Thomas campus. Practices are held every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 5 p.m. Individuals interested in participating can visit a practice or check out the UVI Carnival Troupe web page on the UVI home page (link below). UVI's community engagement Carnival committee will conduct a car wash from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 17, in the Student Affairs parking lot on the St. Thomas campus.
Advisement, Registration for Fall 2004 Continues Through April 14
UVI is conducting advisement and registration of continuing students for the fall 2004 semester through Wednesday, April 14. Following advisement, returning UVI students can register via the Internet from anywhere through Friday, April 23. To register on-line students must first visit advisors for approval of course selections. Advisors will provide Personal Identification Numbers that students need to go on-line at on-line at banweb.uvi.edu to register.
St. Croix Highlights Counseling and Placement Month Activities
April is National Counseling Awareness Month and UVI's counseling and placement office on the St. Croix campus is hosting a series of special programs designed specifically for the University's faculty, staff and students. Activities continue through April 16, when Student Employee Appreciation Day will be held. Check the UVI Web site for the full schedule of events.
UVI Summer Science Enrichment Academies Seeking Students
Positions for more than 100 Virgin Islands students in grades 7 through 12 are available in the 2004 Summer Science Enrichment Academies program to be hosted by UVI. Applications are available from school guidance counselors. The sign-up deadline is April 23. Student Government Association Elections Set April 14 on St. Thomas
The Student Government Association on UVI's St. Thomas campus will hold elections for the 2004-2005 school year Wednesday, April 14. The following positions will be filled: president, vice president, treasurer, senators (three seniors, three juniors and three sophomores). For more information call the student activities office at 693-1111. Faculty and staff are asked to encourage eligible students to participate.
UVI to Offer English Proficiency Exam April 15
UVI will offer the English Proficiency Examination — a graduation requirement — on both campuses at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, April 15. For more information on St. Thomas call 693-1152. For more information on St. Croix call 692-4103. Walk-ins are not accepted. On St. Thomas the test will be administered in room 222 of the
Sports and Fitness Center. On St. Croix the test will be administered in Evans Center rooms 302 and 305.
Annual "UVI Olympics" Slated for St. Croix campus April 15-18
The annual weekend of "UVI Olympics" activities has been announced for the St. Croix campus on April 15 through 18. Thirty St. Thomas campus students have accepted the challenge and plan to compete against St. Croix campus counterparts. Events will include co-ed softball, basketball, tennis, flag football, track, tennis, pool, dominoes and volleyball. For more information contact the student activities offices on St. Thomas at 693-1111 or on St. Croix at 692-4188.
UVI Staff Council to Meet Tuesday, April 27
The next meeting of the UVI Staff Council is scheduled for Tuesday, April 27, at noon. The session will be videoconferenced in Chase Auditorium (Business Education Room 110) on the St. Thomas campus and in the Theater (Evans Center Room 401) on St. Croix campus. More Staff Council information is available on-line on the UVI home page.
Dollars & Sense Seminar on Financial Freedom Set April 14
The third in a series of quarterly seminars entitled Dollars & Sense is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 14 by the New Image Foundation in collaboration with UVI-Small Business Development Center. Willoughby Lewis, president of PGU Insurance Services, will address the topic "Paving the Way to Financial Freedom." The seminar will be held in the SBDC Training Facility, Suite 720, Nisky Center on St. Thomas. Registration is $5. Admission is free for UVI students and faculty. However, pre-registration is required. Call 777-8883 to register.
SBDC Offers Personal Development Workshops in April
The Small Business Development Center will conduct the following seminars during the month of April. For more information or to register for any of these seminars, contact UVI-SBDC at 692-5270. All seminars will be at the UVI SBDC Training Center located in the Sunshine Mall (lower level) St. Croix.
* Coping with Unemployment: What to Do When You Are Out of Work (Goal-setting strategies, successful coping techniques, and realistic jobhunting tips)" – Thursday, April 15, from 1-3 p.m. Admission is free.
* Time Management: Getting the Most Out of Your Day" – Thursday, April 22, from 5:45-8 p.m. Admission $15 with pre-registration ($20 at the door).
* Financial Management: The Need for Disability Insurance and Proper
Business Planning" – Tuesday, April 27 from 5:45-8 p.m. Admission $15 with pre-registration ($20 at the door).
UVI Nursing Students to Display Posters at Tutu Park Mall
UVI bachelor of nursing science students will present a poster display on injury prevention among children in the center court of the Tutu Park Mall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 28. The goal of this project is to expand knowledge of injury prevention while promoting preventative health as an essential component of childcare. Posters will be displayed on a wide range of topics including stranger danger, sun safety, safety around animals, choking prevention, first aid and car seat safety. For details contact UVI nursing professor Dr. Doris W. Campbell at 693-1295.
Mathematics Skills Exams Set May 7 on St. Thomas
The final exam for students taking Mathematics Skills classes on the St. Thomas campus is scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. May 7 in the CA Building. For more information call 693-1253. The final exam schedule for St. Croix campus students will be announced when it becomes available.
UVI-CELL Announces Writing Skills, Bookkeeper Exam Review Courses
UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning Center offers courses designed for individuals seeking new careers and professional advancement, or those who want to explore a hobby or leisure-time activities. Recently announced courses focus on improving writing skills and passing the Certified Bookkeeper Examination.
* Essentials of Business Writing
Learn how to craft clear, simple sentences that get your point across and avoid common pitfalls in writing business correspondence.
Date: May 10-24, 2004 (Mondays and Wednesdays) Time: 6 – 8 p.m.
Location: Marine Science Center (St. Thomas campus) Fee: $1

* Sharpening your Writing Edge
Build and strengthen your writing skills. Learn how to discern proper word choice and usage, correct misspellings, common errors and edit for clarity.
Date: June 2-16, 2004 (Mondays and Wednesdays) Time: 6 – 8 p.m.
Location: Marine Science Center (St. Thomas campus) Fee: $165
Individuals who sign up for both writing courses will be charged only $300. To take advantage of this special offer, register by May 3. The writing courses are offered in collaboration with the American Management Association. Upon successful completion, students can obtain continuing education units.
* Certified Bookkeeper Exam Review
Obtain national certification and a chance to put the CB (Certified Bookkeeper) designation after your name. This course is designed to help experienced bookkeepers prepare for the National Certified Bookkeeper Examination. Certification is conferred by the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers. Skills covered include: Adjusting Entries, Correction of Accounting Errors, Basic Book and Tax Depreciation, Recording and Costing Out Merchandise Inventory, and Basic Payroll.
Prerequisites: Students must know basic bookkeeping before taking this course.
Date: May 11-August 5 Time: Mondays and Wednesdays 6-9 p.m. and Saturdays 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Fee: $995 (includes manuals, class instruction and registration)
Registration Deadline: April 26.
