April 6, 2004 — According to a press release, Communication Technologies, Inc. (COMTek) has signed a preferred agreement with Brightstar Corporation to become the provider in the Caribbean for the Motorola Canopy system, a fixed broadband wireless product.
Brightstar is the master distributor of the Motorola Canopy product for the Latin American and the Caribbean markets. COMTek, as a Motorola-authorized provider, will sell, design, implement, and maintain Canopy fixed wireless solutions throughout North America and now the Caribbean.
The Canopy system is based on wireless broadband technology that provides high-speed Internet access. This system was designed to provide cost-effective, high-speed data access for residential and business customers who previously were underserved or live in locations where infrastructure is nonexistent. Compared to other wireless delivery technologies, the Canopy technology uses a smaller community of cells and involves significantly less network investment.
"The Canopy system will be part of our overall strategy to become the premier communications systems integrator for the Caribbean market," stated Joseph E. Fergus, president and CEO of COMTek.
"It lowers the barriers of entry in providing broadband services and is a cost-competitive infrastructure solution that delivers high-speed data and allows for simple and faster deployment and easier installation."
The Canopy system delivers up to 6 megabytes per second to the subscriber, enabling future advanced broadband IP applications such as Voice-Over-IP and IP Video. With the agreement with Brightstar, Fergus will offer the Canopy solution at a competitive price.
"We are delighted to have COMTek as our preferred communications systems integrator in this region. With their successful track record and reputation for excellence, we have no doubt that COMTek will make the most of this tremendous opportunity in the Caribbean," said Michael Tate, vice president of Wireless Data at Brightstar.
