SOURCE MARKING 5 YEARS WITH COMMUNITY EVENTS

March 17, 2004 – To celebrate its fifth year of producing the Virgin Islands' only independent, award-winning online newspapers, V.I. Source is hosting two events next week that focus on the theme of "E-volution" within the Internet publishing industry.
The first is the March 25 "Business After Hours" event presented by the St. Thomas-St. John Chamber of Commerce.
The second is a daylong professional development seminar on March 26 for representatives of private sector, not-for-profit and government entities on "E-volution: How to Use the Internet effectively in your agency, organization or business."
The seminar, which will be held at Marriott Frenchman's Reef Beach Resort, is the Source's way "of saying thank you to the community for five years of support," Source publisher Shaun A. Pennington said.
"The response has been overwhelming," Pennington said on Wednesday. "People from many segments of the community have expressed their interest, and we are looking forward to a day of lively discussions."
The "Business After Hours" social get-together will take place at Beans, Bytes and Websites in Royal Dane Mall just in from the Charlotte Amalie waterfront, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. At the gathering, which is free and open to chamber members, friends and prospective members, the Source will unveil new E-volutionary developments in design and operations that are on the way.
The event will feature complimentary hors d'oeuvres, the chamber's traditional $2 bar and numerous door prizes including round-trip air travel to San Juan and gift certificates for books and dinners.
Five speakers will give presentations at the seminar, which also is free — with reservations required by this Friday, March 19.
The keynote address will be given at the seminar luncheon by Frank Barnako, co-founder and vice president of CBS MarketWatch and internationally syndicated Internet business columnist. His topic is "How the Internet Has Changed the Way We Get Information, Do Business and Live Our Lives."
Source senior editor Jean Etsinger will lead off the morning session, covering "Public Relations and Digital Publishing: An E-volutionary Partnership."
Steve Parrish, computer systems and optical network specialist and ATN vice president for operations, will then speak on "The Internet from Dream to Reality: A Brief Overview, including Some of the Problems and their Solutions."
Following lunch, Evan Edwards, the principal author of all OnePaper content management systems, including that for the Source newspapers, will give an "E-Presentation: A Day in the Life of George — Internet User."
Virgin Islands Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Melvin Claxton will wrap the day up with comments on "The Power of Community Newspapers to Effect Change: How the Internet Has Changed the Way the News Is Covered and Relayed to Readers."
Organizations wishing to reserve seats for the professional development e-seminar can do so by e-mailing to the Source or by calling 777-8144 no later than Friday.
V.I. Source launched its first site, St. Thomas Source, on Jan. 15, 1999. St. Croix Source followed six months later on July 15, 1999, and St. John Source followed on Dec. 1, 1999.
St. Thomas Source was one of four finalists in the 2002 Online Journalism Awards in the General Excellence category for independent, smaller Internet newspapers. The annual awards are presented by the Online News Association in conjunction with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
The Source publications also have received recognition by several local organizations, including receiving the St. Croix Environmental Association's 2003 Environmental Awareness in Media award.
The publications have been designated newspapers of general circulation by the attorney general. They are published continuously, offering up-to-the-minute news and information about and of particular interest to the Virgin Islands.
Barnako and Claxton are active members of the Source advisory board, along with Penny Feuerzeig, Frank Jordan and Irene Silverman.
