March 1, 2004 – The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued today has these announcements:
UVI's "Mighty Chalkdust" Captures Sixth Trinidad Calypso King Title
Congratulations to Dr. Hollis Liverpool, UVI assistant professor of history in the social science division, who recently won the 2004 Calypso King of Trinidad title. Known as "The Mighty Chalkdust," Dr. Liverpool prevailed over a field of 493 competitors. This is the sixth time he has captured this title.
UVI Buccaneers, Lady Bucs to End Regular Season in Puerto Rico March 4-6
UVI's men's and women's basketball teams head into their final weekend of ODI league play in Puerto Rico with the Lady Bucs tied for first place in the women's division, while the men's team, with a 1-6 record, is in need of two wins to advance to the playoffs. The weekend of March 4 to 6 has been designated "Jump on the Bucs' Wagon," according to assistant athletic director Curtis Gilpin. "We are asking faculty and staff to join us in Puerto Rico for the games on Friday and Saturday." Airline reservations are handled by Caribbean Sun Airways and the UVI contingent will be staying at the Hotel Pierre, which offers a special rate for UVI fans. Airfare is estimated at $108, while the hotel is $118 per day (double). UVI faculty and staff can contact Donna Andrews at 693-1199 for more information regarding travel arrangements.
Friday's games begin at 6 p.m. at Maria Auxiladora School on Roberto Clemente Avenida, just past the Carolina Mall. Saturday's games will be played at the Eastern University campus, which is located near the Carolina Mall. Admission to all games is free.

St. Thomas Campus Intramural Games Feature Buccaneers Players
The university community and general public are invited to attend games in UVI's St. Thomas campus intramural basketball program. Games are scheduled every Monday, Wednesday and Sunday at the Sports and Fitness Center. Seven teams, with 10 players each are participating. One highlight is that members of the UVI Buccaneers men's squad participate in the various teams, allowing fans who can't make the Puerto Rico match-ups a chance to see their favorite players in action. UVI staff members will also want to come out to cheer on the one team that is composed completely of staffers.
Admission is free. One game is played on weeknights, beginning at 7:45 p.m.
Two games are scheduled on Sundays, beginning at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Sunday games are drawing the biggest crowds, according to assistant athletic director Erik Heikkila. Intramural playoffs are scheduled to begin the third week of March. For more information contact Heikkila at 693-1213.
St. Croix Intramural Basketball Concludes Regular Schedule This Week
UVI's intramural basketball program on the St. Croix campus concludes its regular schedule with games this Monday, Wednesday and Friday, March 1, 3 and 5. Intramural playoffs are scheduled to begin March 15. For more information contact Bruce Wrey at 692-4139.
Top College Lacrosse Squads Practicing on St. Croix Campus
Three of the top NCAA Division III women's lacrosse teams are taking their 2004 spring break on St. Croix this week. While in the territory, the women will spend weekday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon conducting practice and games on UVI's St. Croix campus. The practices and games are free and open to the public for viewing. Approximately 170 individuals are in the lacrosse contingent. They are staying at the Carambola Beach Resort. The teams and their accompanying fans are planning trips to Buck Island and to other St. Croix attractions. Lacrosse, a sport that originated among native Americans, has enjoyed wide popularity in recent years, with more than 250,000 active players and college championships that draw more than 40,000 spectators. UVI Carnival Troupe Participation Drive Set for March 2
UVI's community engagement committee will conduct a Carnival Troupe Information and Participation Drive from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 2, at the Dining Pavilion on the St. Thomas Campus. Costume sketches for UVI's 2004 entry in the St. Thomas Carnival adults parade will be on display. Committee members will be on hand to discuss costume prices, sign-up requirements and up-coming fund-raisers. All members of the UVI Community are encouraged to participate in the UVI Carnival entry. Carnival Troupe Food Sale Scheduled March 3 at Sports and Fitness Center
A food sale to generate funds for UVI's Carnival entry will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 3, in front of the Sports and Fitness Center. Main dishes will be chicken, mutton, roast pork, salmon balls, and fried and steamed fish. Side dishes are rice, macaroni, potato salad, potato stuffing, vegetarian lasagna, cole slaw and Johnnycake. The vegetables will be plantain, mixed vegetables and tossed salad. Pea soup will also be featured. Tickets are $7 for meat/poultry, $10 for fish/salmon balls and $5 for pea soup. Purchase tickets at the St. Thomas campus Chancellor's office and from committee members. Free on-campus food delivery will be available. Make arrangements for delivery when tickets are purchased. Other fund-raisers are being planned.
UVI Sets Spring Open House on St. Thomas Campus for March 5
The University of the Virgin Islands has scheduled its spring open house for prospective students on the St. Thomas campus on Friday, March 5. The open house will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center. Representatives from all academic divisions, admissions, financial aid, housing and other university departments will be available to discuss their offerings. All groups/ components/ organizations of the university are encouraged to participate. Approximately 200 students are expected to attend. Some highlights of the day will be face-to-face meetings between students and faculty members, tours, laboratory experiments, displays by the various academic divisions and interactive exercises. Parents are urged to have their children contact school counselors to make sure they can participate in this chance to learn more about UVI. Applications to UVI will also be accepted during the open house. The deadline for applications for the fall semester is April 30, 2004. For more information call 693-1160.
Senior Recital of Pannist Eltino Pickering Set March 7
The Music Area of UVI's humanities division has announced that pannist Eltino S. Pickering will perform a senior recital at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 7, in the auditorium of the Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School. The public is invited. Admission is free. For more information call 693-1192.
Spring Recess at UVI Scheduled for March 8-14
UVI's spring recess will run from Monday, March 8, through Sunday, March 14,
2004. Classes will resume on Monday, March 15.
St. Thomas Faculty-Staff Regalia Order Deadline is March 9
Members of the faculty and professional staff on St. Thomas who need to order regalia in order to participate in commencement (set at 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 22) must place orders with the UVI Bookstore no later than March 9. An order form is available on the "Latest Links" section of the UVI Web site (see link below).
UVI Staff Council to Meet March 9
The next meeting of the UVI Staff Council is scheduled for noon on Tuesday,
March 9. All members of the UVI non-teaching staff are encouraged to attend. The meeting will be videoconferenced between Chase Auditorium
(Business Education room 110) on the St. Thomas campus and the Theater (Evans Center room 401) on the St. Croix campus. For details call 693-1111. Mathematics Skills Exams Set May 7 on St. Thomas
The final exam for students taking mathematics skills classes on the St.
Thomas campus is scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. on May 7. The exam will be offered in the CA Building. For more information call 693-1253. Details of the final exam for students taking mathematics skills class on the St. Croix campus will be announced as soon as available.
Seminar on Filing Business Tax Returns Set for St. Thomas on March 4
A seminar titled "Filing Your 2003 Business Taxes" will be offered by UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and the V.I. Bureau of Internal Revenue on St. Thomas from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 4, at the UVI-SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center. Seminar topics will include: tax changes for 2003, how to compute your taxes, which local and federal taxes apply, how to file your business taxes accurately, how returns are selected for audit. SBDC Sets Business Counseling Series March 8 through 12 on St. Thomas
UVI's Small Business Development Center on St. Thomas has announced its 2004 Business Counseling Series will run from Monday, March 8, through Friday, March 12. The series is designed to provide prospective and existing business owners with effective planning, management tools, best practices information, preventive measures and helpful hints on business principles. The following topics will be presented in separate morning and afternoon sessions at the SBDC's conference room, at Nisky Center. All sessions will be offered from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and repeated from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on the specified days.
— March 8: Personal Credit/Effective Money Management
— March 9: Tips for Effectively Interviewing, Selecting, and Managing Your Employees
— March 10: Innovative Advertising/Marketing Techniques
— March 11: Writing and Implementing an Effective Business Plan
— March 12: Effective Cash Flow Management for Emerging and Existing Business Owners
The sessions are free; however, seating is limited to five persons per session to provide for convenient hands-on instruction. As a result, space will only be reserved for individuals who pre-register by Thursday, March 4. To pre-register or for more information call 776-3206.
Seminar on QuickBooks Pro 2001 Offered March 9 by SBDC on St. Croix
UVI's Small Business Development Center will conduct a seminar entitled "Discovering QuickBooks Pro 2001" from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 9, at the SBDC training center located in Sunshine Mall (lower level) on St. Croix.
Admission for those who pre-register is $15. Registration at the door is $20. Admission is free for UVI employees and students, but pre-registration is requested. Space in this seminar is limited. To secure a space, registration fee must be received by Friday, March 5. For more information or to register, contact UVI-SBDC at 692-5270.
