Feb. 19, 2004 – If you're a student involved in an environmental action program, you could be a winner in the Environmental Protection Agency's President's Environmental Youth Awards competition.
Open to youths, individually or in groups, from kindergarten through grade 12, the competition's aim is to develop leadership skills through environmental action.
Past projects covered programs such as recycling in schools and communities, nature preserve construction, major tree-planting programs, environmental videos, skits and newsletters, and environmental science projects.
V.I. schoolchildren can compete with counterparts in their region for certificates of commendation signed by President Bush. The Virgin Islands is part of EPA Region 2, which also includes New York, New Jersey and Puerto Rico.
Youths may also compete for national recognition and a trip to the national awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. One winner will be selected from each of EPA's 10 regions.
Certificate awards are available year round. Applications may be obtained at any time.
Applications for the national awards are due July 31.
In 2003, Samuel Iva’n Alejandro Rivera, of Fajardo, Puerto Rico was recognized as the Region 2 winner for his work in 2002.
To be eligible, a student or students, sponsored by an adult, must submit to their local EPA regional office evidence of a completed project, as well as a completed application.
