ON INTER-ISLAND ECONOMIC FAIRNESS

Dear Source,
Wouldn't it be great if our Public Finance Authority, our governor, and our Legislature were as interested in solving St. Croix's sewage and dump problems as they are in solving St. Thomas sewage and dump problems? One has to hope they are not considering shipping St. Thomas' garbage to St. Croix to be bailed and stacked until who knows which century. (Which island creates the most garbage?)
One has to wonder if there is any sense at all of inter-island economic fairness. Look how fast bond funds were located to acquire recreational facilities on St. Thomas. Look at how much taxation will have been lost by the acquisition of Lindqvist Beach and another beach on St. Thomas.
One also has to wonder if the bonds were financed by the rum funds created on St. Croix, plus perhaps funds from our other main St. Croix funding source for bonding (and taxation). When there is a vote — if there is a Legislative vote — on the approval of the acquisition of Lindqvist Beach, should all of the St. Croix Senators support it?
These are just some of the many, many matters which are becoming the "Soufrière of the U.S. Virgin Islands." It's only a matter of time.
