IMHOFF, FELTON FEATURED IN SÓLO ARTE SHOW

Jan. 5, 2004 – The first Sólo Arte gallery exhibition of the new year, "Islands in the Dream," is a duo show of watercolors and sketches by longtime St. John painter Roy Imhoff and camera images by award-winning St. Thomas photographer Gary Felton.
It opens Friday evening with a meet-the-artists reception at the gallery, located in the Cruz Bay Lumberyard.
Sólo Arte owner Janet Cook-Rutnik says the two artists are exhibiting "a large collection of work that shares the common theme of island inspiration."
Imhoff, who has been drawing and painting scenes of St. John and its people for more then 25 years, is showing watercolors along with the pen-and-ink sketches that preceded them. "His work records the changes in island customs and places and includes many buildings and scenes that are now only fond memories," Cook-Rutnik says. "His figures evoke the easy but passionate lifestyle that makes St. John unique."
Imhoff has exhibited locally and throughout the States. His drawings have appeared in The New Yorker, Gourmet and Martha's Vineyard magazines, as well as locally.
Felton is a native Californian whose life and work have revolved around sensory experiences of the sea. After becoming the youngest diving instructor in the nation in 1967, he studied oceanographic engineering at the University of California. He got his bachelor's degree from Brooks Institute of Photography with a major in advertising illustration.
A professional boat captain for many years, he was photo editor of Dive magazine prior to relocating to St. Thomas in 1986. His images have also appeared on covers and with articles in Cruising World, Sailing, Yachting, Sport Diver, Aloha and U.S. News & World Report. Italy's Arte Navale magazine published a 12-page portfolio of his marine images in 2002 and is including him in its upcoming picture book "The World's Greatest Marine Artists." He is represented in the permanent collections of the Brooks Institute and Professional Photographers of America.
Friday's reception is from 6 to 9 p.m. The Lumberyard is located a short walk from the Cruz Bay ferry dock. The show will hang through Jan. 30. For more information, call the galley at 715-2150.
