Dec. 28, 2003 — Three St. Croix men were injured Sunday evening in a hail of gunfire that erupted around 5 p.m. near the De Chabert housing community. Police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Hannah said the shooting, initially classified as a drive-by, left three individuals with gunshot wounds. According to Hannah, "The shooting took place near De Chabert Building 16 and the eruption of gunfire was heard as far away as downtown Christiansted."
At the scene, officers found Shay John, 29, with a gunshot wound to the left ankle. Gastil John, age unknown, was shot in the left buttocks, and Le 'Var Pagson, age also unknown, suffered a gunshot wound to the chest region.
Witnesses told police of multiple gunshots being fired before the three were struck. Hannah said Pagson is the most seriously injured of the three and will likely undergo emergency surgery. The other two victims are expected to be treated and released from Juan Luis hospital tonight.
As of late Sunday, police had not recovered any of the weapons used in the shooting and had not identified any suspects in the case.
"The motive for the shooting remains unclear … there has been some conflicting information about what went down," Hannah said from the scene.
