Dec. 19, 2003 — Scotiabank awarded the University of the Virgin Islands $20,000 recently to support eight student scholarships. The support will be split between UVI's two campuses, with $10,000 being used to fund four student scholarships on each campus.
Scotiabank Vice President and Country Manager Peter Van Schie (pronounced Van Skee) made the check presentation to Joseph Boschulte, UVI's vice president for institutional advancement.
"Scotiabank has been involved with this scholarship program and is happy to assist students in their pursuit of higher education," Van Schie said.
Today's check presentation represents Scotiabank's longstanding $20,000 annual commitment to funding scholarships at UVI. Each year, Scotiabank awards $10,000 in scholarships to students on each of UVI's two campuses. Scotiabank's first UVI scholarship award took place in June 1996.
"The University of the Virgin Islands is appreciative of Scotiabank's commitment to its students and to the future of the territory," Boschulte said. "We are nurturing scholars who will recognize that corporate philanthropy is a vote of confidence in their abilities."
UVI students can apply for Scotiabank scholarships, which are renewable each year, based upon academic performance. Scotiabank awards up to a maximum of $2,500 per grade level. For further information, please call Ardrina Scott-Elliott at 693-1096.
