UVI to Observe Veteran's Day on Tuesday, Nov. 11
UVI will be closed on Tuesday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veteran's Day.
Spring Semester Advisement/Registration for Returning Students Under Way
Registration for all returning UVI students intending to enroll in spring 2004 semester classes is under way on both campuses. In addition to in-person registration, on-line registration via the Internet is available. Students are urged to take advantage of on-line registration. Registration continues through Nov. 12.Spring semester classes will begin Jan. 10.
— All students are requested to register via the web at the UVI home page (click on link at bottom of article).
— Personal ID numbers or PINS (required for on-line registration) may be obtained for matriculated students from advisers, department chairs or department administrative assistants.
— Non-matriculated students may obtain PINS from the Registrar's office in the CA Building on the St. Thomas campus or in the academic services office in the Evans Center on the St. Croix campus. Office hours will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. throughout the registration period to accommodate both day and evening students.
— A schedule of spring courses is posted on the web at these links:

— Hard copies of spring course schedules will be available in all division offices, student counseling offices, the Freshman Center, the Registrar's office and the academic services office.
— Web registration is available daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. On-line registration will close at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 12.
— Signs with more information will be posted on both campuses.
— Advisement and registration for new students will be held on
Thursday, Jan. 8.
UVI Community Invited to Join "Virgin Gorda Get-A-Way" Nov. 11
The UVI community is invited to join in the "Virgin Gorda Get-A-Way" scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 11. A stop at the famous rock formation known as "The Baths" will be the trip highlight.
Space is limited to the first 100 individuals to sign up. Ferry transportation will be on the "Hurricane" departing the Tortola Wharf in Charlotte Amalie at 8 a.m. Return is scheduled at 5:30 p.m. Transportation charges are as follows: $20 for UVI students; $40 for UVI faculty and staff; $50 for non-UVI participants; $10 for children 3-4 years old; and $35 for children 5-11 years old. An additional $5 per person is required for BVI Port Charges. Transportation to the ferry dock will be offered at 7:30 a.m. from the student affairs office on the St. Thomas campus.
Individuals are responsible for their own lunch arrangements. An optional stop at Fishers Cove on Virgin Gorda is available or pick-up orders will be accepted at the UVI Cafeteria before departure. Call the cafeteria directly at 693-1137 to place orders.
Virgin Gorda is a British port. Visitors are required to present a valid passport or, if for U.S. citizens, a birth certificate with a picture ID. Note: The BVI no longer has the "no dreadlocks" entry requirement.
Nov. 7 Application Deadline Set for English Proficiency Examinations
UVI will conduct English Proficiency Examinations (EPE) on the St. Croix and St. Thomas campus on Thursday, Nov. 13. The EPE is a graduation requirement for all undergraduate UVI students. The exam application deadline is Friday, Nov. 7. Walk-ins will not be accepted. To register on the St. Thomas campus, visit the Enrollment Management Office, located on the second floor of the Classroom/ Administration (CA) building. For details call 693-1152.
To register on the St. Croix campus, visit the academic services office in Evans Center Room 811. A workshop to prepare students to take the EPE is planned for Nov. 7 on St. Croix. For details call 692-4103.
Deadline to Apply for MBA Comprehensive Exam is Nov. 7
The Masters of Business Administration Comprehensive Exam will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 21 in the conference room of the Marine Science Center on the St. Thomas campus and the Research room 139 of the Extension Center on the St. Croix campus. The deadline to apply for the exam is Nov. 7. For more information and to apply students on the St. Thomas campus should call Jacinthe Proctor at 693-1311. St. Croix Psychology Club to Host Lecture on Sports Topics Nov. 7
The Psychology Club on UVI's St. Croix campus will host a presentation on sports and exercise by Dr. Marc Lochbaum at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, in room 401 of the Evans Center. Dr. Lochbaum, an assistant professor of sport and exercise psychology at Texas Tech University, will speak on "Choking in Sports: A Heart to Head Explanation" and "Exercise Adherence: A Personality Problem?" Dr. Lochbaum's research interests include personality and exercise behavior, psychosocial aspects of quality of life issues associated with physical activity and optimal performance in competitive sports. Admission is free. The university community and the general public are invited. Bird Watching, Plant and Marine Ecology Workshops Set at VIERS
The Virgin Islands Environmental Resource Station (VIERS), located on the south side of St. John in the V.I. National Park, will host several free workshops. VIERS has many visiting scientists in different fields who are available to share their studies with the public. Peter Verdurmood (from Holland) has been birdwatching on St. John for several years and is available to take anyone interested on park trails to several observation points every morning starting at 7 a.m. from VIERS from Nov. 7-14.
Dragan Popov (from the Bahamas), director of Island Expedition's School at Sea and Host of the Discovery Channel's Sail Away program, is available to lead marine ecology classes every day from Nov. 7-14.
In addition, several scientists from UVI are currently studying at VIERS and are available (with an appointment) to discuss their studies.

VIMAS/St. Croix to Sponsor Underwater Slide Presentation Nov. 12
Underwater photographer Hank Tonnemacher will present a slide show titled "Diving Around the World: Some of the World's Best Diving" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at the Theatre in the Evans Center on UVI's St. Croix Campus.

Opening Ceremony for UVI Model Farm Project Set Nov. 16
The public is invited to an opening ceremony for the UVI Integrated Model Farm Project from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 16. The farm, situated on five acres of land adjacent to the St. Croix campus, was developed by UVI's Agricultural Experiment Station. It includes rainwater collection systems, holding ponds, tanks for raising fish and an irrigation system which uses the effluent from the fish tanks. UVI Professor Dr. James Rakocy, one of the farm's developers, said the model farm represents the best of 30 years of experimentation and work at developing sustainable and economically viable agricultural systems for the Caribbean. A brief presentation and tours of the farm are planned. The farm can be assessed by following signs from
the UVI Research and Extension Center on the St. Croix campus.

UVI Little Theatre to Present "Man Better Man" Nov. 21-24
The play "Man Better Man" by Errol Hill will be staged Nov. 21 to 24 at the UVI Little Theatre on the St. Thomas campus. Showtime is 8 p.m. each day. Tickets are $6 for students and $12 for general admission. Outlets for tickets are the Humanities Division, UVI Bookstore, Dockside Bookstore and Nisky Pharmacy. For more information call 693-1087.
St. Thomas/St. John Agriculture and Food Fair Set Nov. 22-23
The 22nd annual St. Thomas/St. John Agriculture and Food Fair will be held Nov. 22 and 23 on the grounds of UVI's Reichhold Center For the Arts. The theme for this year's fair is "Celebrate Our Culture: Support V.I. Agriculture."
The fair will feature the sale of fruits and vegetables, nursery plants, fruit trees, vegetable seedlings, local art and crafts, food and more. Educational displays and workshops are planned. A special section for children will feature games, a petting zoo at the livestock pavilion and pony rides. Live entertainment will be presented throughout both days.
Best-tasting sweetbread and best-tasting maubi contests, and a heaviest pumpkin contest are planned. Door prizes will be given away.
Fair hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Opening ceremonies are set at 2 p.m. on the Saturday. Admission is $2 for those 12 years and older and $1 for those 11 and under. For more information call 774-5182 or 693-1080.
School Agriculture Activity Day Set Nov. 21
The third Annual School Agriculture Activity Day is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday Nov. 21, on the grounds of the Reichhold Center for the Arts. Organized by the St. Thomas/ St. John Agriculture and Food Fair Committee, the event will feature learning stations where students and teachers can interact with individuals and organizations related to the field of agriculture. Some of the displays will include, horse grooming, beekeeping, grafting demonstrations, marine animals touch pool, fishpot-making, a petting zoo, litter critter and lots more. All schools, Head Start programs and day-care programs are encouraged to attend. Admission is free.
