VICTIM-HELP SEMINARS SET THIS WEEK

Nov. 1, 2003 — U.S. Attorney David Nissman said his office will be sponsoring a "Victim, Violence and Sex Offense Training Conference" in both St. Thomas and St. Croix. Co-sponsors are the V.I. Police Department and the Domestic Violence and Sex Assault Council.
The seminars are set for Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 3 and 4, at the Wyndham Bay Sugar Bay Resort and for Thursday and Friday, Nov. 6 and 7, at the Carambola Beach Resort.
"The goal of the conference is to train victim providers, law enforcement and first responders in providing better service to people who have felt the devastating effects of crime and who face the prospect of re-victimization," Nissman's office said in a statement issued Friday. "Additionally, this training will alert them on the needs and rights of the victim."
Speaking at the meetings will be Dr. Brian Ogawa of Washburn University, author of several books and a nationally known consultant. Also presenting will be Cassandra Thomas of the Houston Area Women's Center, who is a leading expert on sexual assault, according to the statement.
