Oct. 31, 2003 — It's time for the second annual St. Thomas/St. John Pathfinders Kayak-A-Thon, and organizers are seeking donations.
Youngsters from ages 10 to 15 will kayak on Nov. 16 round-trip across Pillsbury Sound from St. Thomas to St. John and return. For those who want to watch the action, the kayakers will leave Sapphire Beach, St. Thomas, about 8:30 a.m., rest up awhile in Cruz Bay, and then return.
They will be in two-man kayaks, and will travel single-file in groups of six accompanied by a leader, said Royden Fleming, area coordinator. St. Thomas Rescue and personnel from V.I. Planning and Natural Resources Department will be at the scene as well.
Unfortunately, Fleming said, there are a limited number of kayaks available, and more children than can be accommodated want to make the trip. He hopes donations will make possible opening the annual trip to the young public another year. Sponsorship donations will benefit the Family Resource Center on St. Thomas, the Safety Zone on St. John and the Pathfinder clubs.
This event is a "positive response to the many negative youth concerns in our territory," said a release. This is "clean, environmentally friendly, teamwork recreation."
For more information call Fleming at 775-9420 or 690-4361 or Silton Browne at 775-5550.
