Oct. 9, 2003 — The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued today has these announcements:
UVI Fielding Teams for St. Croix Relay for Life
The UVI community is being encouraged to participate in The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life fund raising event scheduled on St. Croix from 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 until 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12. UVI is forming teams composed of students and faculty-staff for the event. The goal is for each team to have at least one person walking at all times during the 24-hour event. The entry fee is $10 per person, and each participant is encouraged to raise as much additional funding as possible for the Cancer Society.
Interested students should contact Miriam Osborne-Elliott at 692-4187. Faculty and staff members who wish to participate should contact Dr. David Gould at 692-4143. Each team member will receive a commemorative t-shirt.
St. Thomas SGA Installs Executive Board, Student Council
The UVI St. Thomas campus Student Government Association (SGA) installed its 2003-2004 executive board and a nine-member student council in ceremonies Wednesday, Oct. 8.
Tina Nkechi Lapenna is student government president. Vice president is Neville Williams. Marika Blondel serves as treasurer, Melanie Graham is secretary and Valicia Burke is the public relations officer. Student senators are seniors: Latasha Joseph, Cherise Gardner and Wilma Espinosa; junior: Kahlilah Gordon; sophomores: Idesha Browne and Kim-Marie Jn Baptiste; and freshmen: Ivan Connor, Amarie Blyden-Richards and Gilbert Hodge.
UVI Volleyball Squads to Host PR Teams Oct. 10-11
UVI faculty, staff and students and the public are encouraged to come out for this weekend's varsity volleyball action — the only varsity matches scheduled on St. Thomas for the 2003 season. The UVI teams' other matches in the Inter-University Sports Organization (ODI) league are all taking place in Puerto Rico this season.
The Buccaneers, who are 0-4 on the season, and the Lady Buccaneers, who are 1-3, will be hosting Inter-University Sports Organization (ODI) squads from Puerto Rico's East University (UNE) and Metropolitan University (UMET) on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 10 and 11, at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center. The Puerto Rican squads should provide tough competition. The UNE women are defending league champions, while the UMET women are undefeated this season and the UMET men are in second place.

Short Course on Nutrition and Health Planned on St. Croix
An eight-week short course on Nutrition and Health will be conducted beginning Oct. 13 by UVI's Cooperative Extension Service on St. Croix. Classes will meet from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, and from 1:30 to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in room 134 of the UVI Research and Extension Service. Intramural Tennis Tournaments Set Oct. 17-18 on St. Thomas, St. Croix
UVI will conduct singles intramural tennis tournaments on St. Thomas and St. Croix on Oct. 17 and 18. Both tournaments will start at 6 p.m. on Friday and continue on Saturday (start time on Saturday depends on number of entries). The tournament is divided into two flights, with divisions for men and women. One flight is designated for varsity, staff and alumni. The second flight is for currently enrolled UVI students. The entry fee is $5. Participants will receive a free T-shirt. Anyone interested should contact Erik Heikkila at 693-1213 on St. Thomas or Bruce Wray at 692-4139 on St. Croix.
UVI Seventh-day Adventist Students Association Sets Installation
The UVI Seventh-day Adventist Student Association will hold its installation service at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at the Maranatha SDA Church near Kirwan Terrace School. Pastor J. Wilmoth James will be the speaker. Alumni and the public are invited. For details call Dr. Dion Phillips at 693-1261.
Nurse Lecture Series Continues Oct. 13 with Cancer-Related Topic
The fourth Martha and Bennie Benjamin Nurse Lecture Series is scheduled at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, on the UVI St. Thomas campus, with video-conferenced access on the St. Croix campus. The guest lecturer will be Sandra Millon Underwood, Ph.D., RN, FAAN.
Dr. Underwood's presentation is titled "Reducing Cancer Related Health Disparities Through Education and Outreach: If Only Those of Us Who Could . . . Would."
The lecture will be given in Chase Auditorium (Business Education Room 110) and video-conferenced to the Theater (Evans Center Room 401) on St. Croix. UVI Chapter of National Association for Music Education Car Wash Set Oct. 17
The National Association for Music Education's UVI Chapter-1016 will hold a car wash from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at the UVI Music Education Building on the St. Thomas campus. Prices range from $5 for small cars, $8 for medium cars and $10 for pick-up trucks. Interior detailing will also available at a reasonable price. Additionally, snacks and drinks will be on sale. UVI Music Department to Hold Fall Concert on Oct. 18
The UVI Music Department will present its annual fall semester concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Christchurch Methodist Church in Market Square, Charlotte Amalie. The concert is titled "To God Be the Glory." Performers will include the UVI Concert Band, under the direction of professor Austin Venzen, and the University Concert Choir, under the direction of professor Elvira Green. Eugenia Chapman, Detra Davis, Melita Etienne, Danielle Greenaway and Eltino Pickering will solo. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. World Food Day Observance Set for St. Croix Campus
World Food Day will be observed from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, on UVI's St. Croix campus. Educational workshops will be featured. Topics covered will be goat, avocado and cucumber production. Also planned are food demonstrations, games for children, guided tours of the UVI Agricultural Experiment Stations research facilities, a food vendors court, a farmers market and a cook-off competition. Local music and cultural entertainment will be provided.
World Food Day is sponsored locally by the UVI Cooperative Extension Service, Agricultural Experiment Station and the V.I. Agriculture Department. For more information contact Clarice Clarke at 692-4060.
Red Ribbon Week Activities Scheduled for St. Thomas Campus
UVI's St. Thomas Campus will join communities nationwide to celebrate National Red Ribbon Week from Oct. 27 to Nov. 2. This year's theme is "Drug Free Is The Way To Be For Making The Promise For 2003." Red Ribbon week commemorates the murder of a Drug Enforcement Agency officer in Mexico in 1985.
A variety of activities – pledge day, wear red day, decoration day, a debate and more – are planned on the St. Thomas campus. For more information contact the office of the associate chancellor at 693-1120.
