Oct. 6, 2003 — (Army & Air Force Hometown News) — Army National Guard Spec. Selwyn D. Gumbs has arrived at the U.S. Naval Base, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to serve as a member of Joint Task Force-GTMO in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Gumbs is a military policeman with 10 years of military service.
The son of Cynthia Proctor of Borger Gade, and brother of Alicia Gumbs, both of St. Thomas, he is a 1990 graduate of Ivanna Eudora Kean High School.
Servicemembers from all branches of the U.S. armed forces are involved in joint-military detention, interrogation and intelligence-gathering operations at various detention camps in Guantanamo. Joint Task Force members are responsible for operating, maintaining and securing detention facilities which confine Al-Qaeda and Taliban operative forces, and other suspected terrorists who come under U.S. control as a result of the ongoing war on global terrorism.
