May 19, 2003 – Under a recent amendment to the Additional Benefits Act of 2002 signed into law by Gov. Charles W. Turnbull on Jan. 10, the benefit period for eligible unemployment claimants has been extended to Aug. 30. It was to have expired on May 31.
Those eligible for the benefits are entitled to 13 times their weekly benefit amount or 50 percent of the parent claim, whichever is less, according to a Labor Department release.
To qualify for the benefits, individuals must have exhausted their regular benefits or their rights to those benefits after March 15, 2001. Those whose benefit year ended prior to that date are not entitled to additional benefits.
To be eligible for the additional benefits, individuals must not be collecting or be entitled to any other unemployment insurance benefits including temporary extended unemployment compensation. Those wishing to determine their eligibility should visit the unemployment office where they filed their original claim.
