May 16, 2003 – Following are summaries of information provided to the Source by sponsoring organizations about scholarships currently available.

Guy Benjamin Parent/Teacher Organization
Donor organization: Guy Benjamin Elementary School Parent/Teacher Organization
Number of scholarships: Not announced
Amount of scholarship: $1,000
Qualifications: High school 2003 graduates who attended Guy H. Benjamin School on St. John for at least four years and who have at least a 3.0 grade point average.
Deadline for applying: May 27, 2003

V.I. Housing Authority Section 8 S.E.E.K.S.
Donor organization: V.I. Housing Authority (VIHA)
Number of scholarships: One in each district
Amount of scholarship: $1,000
Qualifications: Housing's Section 8 Program participants aged 16-21 who have been accepted into a college, trade or technical school and have at least a GPA of 3.0.
Deadline: 5 p.m. May 30, 2003
How/where to obtain an application: VIHA's central office on St. Croix; VIHA annex located in Oswald Harris Court for St. Thomas/St. John applicants.

Ruby Rutnik
Donor organization: Ruby Rutnik Scholarship Fund
Number of scholarships: One for one year, renewable for a second year
Amount of scholarship: $2,500
Qualifications: St. John females whose families or selves have resided on St. John for at least five years.
Other information of note: Notice will be given by June 15, 2003.
Deadline for submitting: May 31, 2003 (extended)
How/where to obtain an application: Pick up at Connections in Cruz Bay or Coral Bay, or call the Rutniks at 693-8069.

Robert C. Byrd
Donor organization: V.I. Education Department
Number of scholarships: Five
Amount of scholarship: $1,500
Qualifications: Graduating seniors of V.I. public, private and parochial schools in the St. Thomas/St. John District, or students who have successfully completed a GED program; have been accepted and plan to be a full-time student.
Other information of note: The scholarship can be renewed for a maximum of eight semesters if eligibility is maintained.
The V.I. Education Department administers this program in compliance with section 419 E of the Higher Education Act of 1965.
Deadline for submitting: 5 p.m. July 30, 2003
How/where to obtain an application: the Office of the Commissioner of the Education Department, the Curriculum Center in Anna's Retreat and at various high schools on St. Thomas.
