May 5, 2003 – The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued today has these announcements:
UVI Appoints Beth Heyliger Chief Information Officer
UVI president LaVerne E. Ragster has appointed Beth Heyliger to the position of chief information officer of the University of the Virgin Islands. By virtue of her position, Heyliger will serve as a member of the President's Cabinet.
Heyliger comes to the university with more than 20 years of consulting experience in information systems development and management. She had most recently been employed as chief information officer for the Niagara College of Applied Arts and Technology in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, and served as chair and CIO of the Community College Information Service Directors, representing 25 colleges. dateline:UVI Now Available On-line; Service Award Recipients Featured
The current issue of dateline:UVI is now available on the UVI web site. The issue highlights the recently held faculty and staff service awards programs held on St. Croix and St. Thomas. All award recipients are listed in the issue. dateline:UVI is also available from the UVI web site home page or at this direct link.
Final Exams Week Underway at UVI
Final exams for UVI students are scheduled from May 5 through May 11. The semester officially ends on Sunday, May 11. Spring 2003 commencement exercises are scheduled for Saturday, May 17, on the St. Thomas campus and for Sunday, May 18, on the St. Croix campus.
UVI to Offer Legal Assistant Exam Review Course
UVI's community and personal development unit will conduct a Legal Assistant Certification Exam Review Course from May 12 through July 17 on St. Croix.
Registration for the course is offered through May 7. To register for the course, contact the unit at 693-1100 or by e-mail.
The 10-week course is geared toward professionals in the legal field. It will include a detailed review of and prepare individuals to take the Legal Assistant Certification Exam.
Ilene Garner, director of the unit, said that UVI is now recognized by the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) and now operates as an official NALA testing site.
UVI-CPDU to Offer Computer Driving License Certification Courses
UVI's personal development unit has announced plans to offer a seven-week International Computer Driving License Program on both campuses. Registration is available through May 9 on St. Thomas. Registration on St. Croix will be open from May 22 through June 13.
The program is a globally recognized training and certification program that provides a gateway for individuals to raise their level of knowledge in fundamental computer concepts and skills.
The training program targets anyone who has a desire to use a computer competently. No prior knowledge or experience is required. Students will master basic concepts, managing files, word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentations, using the Web and e-mail.
The course will be offered on St. Thomas from May 13 through June 14 (Weeks 1-4) and July 22 through August 9, 2003 (Weeks 5-7).
The course will be offered on St. Croix from June 17 through July 19 (Weeks 1-4) and August 12 through August 30 (Weeks 5-7).

UVI Concert Band, High School Students to Present Concert May 10
The UVI Concert Band will join with local high school student performers to present hits from the '40s and '50s in a "Remembering With Callwood" concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at the Charlotte Amalie High School auditorium. Local radio personality Richard Callwood Sr., who conducts a weekly "Remembering With Callwood" show on WSTA, will host the concert. Tickets — $15 for adults and $10 for students — are available at UVI's Bookstore, Humanities Department, and from concert band members, and at Krystal and Gifts Galore in Tutu Park Mall and Dockside Bookshop in Havensight.
SBDC to Offer Microsoft PowerPoint Workshop on St. Croix
The UVI Small Business Development Center will conduct an "Introduction to Microsoft PowerPoint" workshop from 5:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14, at the UVI-SBDC training center located in the Sunshine Mall lower level, St. Croix. SBDC Seminar on Developing Resumes Set May 28 on St. Croix
The UVI Small Business Development Center will conduct a seminar entitled "Stop Keeping Yourself A Secret: Developing a Resume That Will Work For You" from 5:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28, at the UVI-SBDC training center located in the Sunshine Mall lower level, St. Croix.
