REGISTER TO SEEK IRAQ REBUILDING SUBCONTRACTS

May 3, 2003 – V.I. businesses interested in subcontracting opportunities for companies owned by minorities and women under an initial $34.6 million contract awarded to Bechtel Corp. for work in the rebuilding of Iraq need to register online with the corporation's database, Delegate Donna M. Christensen announced in a release.
The contract for electrical and water supply infrastructure work is from USAID, the U.S. Agency for International Development. Christensen said the Congressional Black Caucus, of which she is a member, has written to Andrew Natsios, USAID administrator, asking that the agency host five regional meetings to discuss the subcontracting opportunities.
A conference for supplier subcontractors is to be held in Washington, D.C., in early May at a date and place to be announced, and at that time Bechtel will have an open bidding process in place for prospective subcontractors, Christensen said. Bechtel has said is will schedule a second conference, also with details to come.
Meantime, Christensen said, interested companies should register now with the Bechtel Corp. supplier database. For more information, call her office at (202) 225-1790.
