April 5, 2003 — On April 30, Carnival fairgoers coming to "Lucia's Straw Market" will find Lucia Penn with her display of straw baskets and hats located under the tree in front of the former First Bank location — where she has been found for more than 20 years of Carnival Fairs.
Gov. Charles W. Turnbull, honoree Penn, and Carnival royalty will officially open the 2003 fair at noon Wednesday, April 30, at the Rothschild Francis Market Square. But for many people the eating will be well under way by then — from the assortment of local foods, drinks, cakes and pastries that are promised.
There will also be an array of locally made handicrafts, along with many commercial crafts. As always, said a release, there will be participants from "our sister islands, St. Croix and St. John."
Music will be provided by Milo's Kings and the All Stars Steel Orchestra. Other entertainment, including quadrille groups, is on the program.
Persons visiting "Lucia's Straw Market" are reminded to adhere to the rules of the departments of Police, Fire and Environmental Health, in conjunction with the Carnival Fair Subcommittee, to assure a safe and happy time of festivities, the release said.
