NPS DIRECTOR TO BE FRIENDS OF PARK SPEAKER

Jan. 5, 2003 – Fran Mainella, director of the National Park Service, will be the featured speaker at the annual Friends of the V.I. National Park meeting on Jan. 12.
The meeting is set for 2 p.m. in the T'ree Lizards Restaurant at Cinnamon Bay Campground.
Mainella is expected to speak on the importance of public-private partnerships for national parks and to provide insights into issues affecting national parks across the country.
Mainella previously visited St. John last July to take part in a congressional subcommittee hearing on parks in the Virgin Islands. "We are extremely pleased she will again honor the Virgin Islands and our park with another visit so soon," Joe Kessler, Friends president, said.
Kim Lyons, Friends development director, said the annual meeting provides a chance for people who may have questions or concerns about the park or the Friends organization to get some answers — "and get a different perspective."
Park Superintendent John King will give the annual state of the park address, and Kessler will review Friends activities over the last year and preview plans for 2003.
Because parking is extremely tight at Cinnamon Bay, the organization asks that people traveling from the Cruz Bay end of the island to the meeting utilize a free shuttle. It will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the park's maintenance parking lot, located next to the Mongoose Junction shopping center.
Friends annual dues for 2003 may be paid at the meeting. Memberships start at $30 per person and $50 per family. More than 2,100 people around the world are members of the not-for-profit organization.
For more information about the group, visit the Friends of the V.I. National Park Web site, or call 779-4940.
