'TIS THE SEASON FOR TOWING JUNK VEHICLES

Dec. 19, 2002 – With the fast-approaching Crucian Festival parades as an incentive, the Governor's Junked Vehicle Removal Task Force on St. Croix will be hitting the streets starting Friday to tag derelict vehicles for towing that is to commence on Tuesday — Christmas Eve day.
The goal is to remove all junk vehicles from the Christiansted area before the start of the parades, St. Croix Administrator Gregory R. Francis said. "The abundance of abandoned vehicles littering out town's roadsides makes traffic and parking difficult on a daily basis," he said, "but with the influx of thousands of people for the parades, parking is at a premium."
The task force is a joint effort of the Police, Public Works, Property and Procurement, and Planning and Natural Resources Departments. They have been tasked with "working cohesively to identify and remove all junked vehicles throughout downtown Christiansted prior to the festival activities," a Government House release distributed on Thursday stated.
"Planning and Natural Resources has been directed to assist in the permitting of this operation, while the Departments of Public Works and Property and Procurement will be draining the fuels, oils and other liquids prior to the vehicles being placed at the Anguilla landfill," the release said.
On the first three days of this week, a similar task force operating on St. Thomas towed a hundred derelict vehicles from neighborhoods on that island, according to a Wednesday Government House release.
