Dec. 2, 2002 – A safety workshop focusing on Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) and other emergency response equipment will be held from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5 in the Student Center on the St. Croix campus of the University of the Virgin Islands.
Representatives from the police and fire departments, schools, emergency services, businesses and the legislature are invited. The workshop is presented by UVI's Hazardous Materials and Safety Committee.
Automated External Defibrillators, used in sudden cardiac arrests, are devices that work by giving the heart a controlled electric shock, forcing all the heart muscles to contract at once, in order to jolt the heart back into a regular rhythm.
The North American Medical Corporation president, Kevin Coonce, will discuss AEDs and other emergency response equipment for businesses, industries and schools. Topics to be discussed include: the American Heart Association training in AED, CPR, emergency oxygen, first aid, blood-borne pathogens and effective emergency response teams; automated emergency oxygen; monthly safety and operational testing; and coordination and notification of local EMS.
There will also be demonstrations of professional emergency response equipment such as gas detection devices for public safety personnel.
