STARVING ARTISTS DAY A FEAST OF CRAFTS, FOODS

Nov. 29, 2002 — The annual Starving Artists Day and Farmers Market is upon us — just in time to replenish your larder after Thanksgiving and to give you a head start on some good ideas for Christmas gifting.
Sunday, Dec. 1, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Whim Museum will be the site of a wide variety of arts and crafts, shopping, food and cash bar all day, produce to buy, art show, museum tour, library booth, storytelling, cash raffle, and live music– more activities than one person can devour.
Start off early with a continental breakfast served by Café du Soleil from 10 a.m. to noon. Then, fortified, shop the museum store's big tent sale for furniture, art, and decorative accessories, and shop more than 70 exhibitors' wares. Visit the art show featuring "Greathouses and Great Houses of St. Croix" — watercolors by Jane Akins. At the library booth, take a look at the historic photos on display and the new note card series, "A Glimpse of St. Croix," for sale.
Stop by for storytelling under the Tamarind Tree. There's a raffle drawing at 4 p.m., so be sure you get your tickets ahead of time.
Food and drink continues throughout the day, with a cash bar all day and 10 Crucian food and drink booths. Music fills the day as well: Bennie Jacobs El and the Complex Combo are on from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Stan Joins and Central High Jazz Band entertain from 2 to 5 p.m.
An important feature of the Day is the farmers market where you can get fresh, locally grown produce. No artists need starve with these farmers and their offerings:
Farmers in Action (Kendall) – coconuts, herbs, limes, okra, tomatoes
La Reine Market (Bonnie Luria) – organic basil, hard squash, kale, lettuce, peppers, watermelon
Smithen Garden – Watch Lemuel make cane juice, coconuts
Southgate Farms (Luca, Patrick, Johnathan) – argula, cut flowers, herbs, lettuce, salad mix, tomatoes.
Art and craft vendors must reserve in person at the Whim office in Frederiksted. The cost is $4 for adults and children free. Vendor sales are by cash or check only.
