Oct. 10, 2002 – The University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, in the Research and Extension Center Building on the St. Croix campus.
The meeting will convene with regular session agenda items beginning with the president’s report, which will include highlights of accomplishments since the previous board meeting. It will be Dr. LaVerne Ragster’s first report to the board in her capacity as president.
The board will consider approval of the Planning Committee’s proposed "Guiding Principles of the Research and Technology Park." The document is a mandate of the Research and Technology Park legislation and will provide guidance to the park board. It will address UVI-research park academic collaboration, finance, park governance and management, the Protected Cell Corporation and occupancy selection and standards of approval.
The Protected Cell Corporation, part of the park, is the means by which hosting services will be provided to knowledge-based businesses, known as "protected cells." Each "protected cell" will have an identified pool of assets and liabilities that are insulated from every other "protected cell" located within the park.
Also requiring the board’s approval are the proposed revisions of the University’s organizational structure. The proposed structure will create a Vice Provost for Student Affairs position. The proposed structure will also empower the chancellors with the authority and responsibility to effectively govern their respective campuses’ day-to-day operations within the system that provides policy oversight under the Provost.
UVI’s Board of Trustees last met on June 17 on the St. Thomas campus. Dr. Auguste E. Rimpel Jr. is the chairman of the board.
