STUDENT EXPLORES NATIONAL SECURITY CAREERS

April 7, 2002 – Dwight Howell, 17, son of Col. Deborah Howell and Chief Warrant Officer 5 Dennis Howell, both of the V.I. National Guard on St. Croix, recently participated in the National Youth Leadership Forum on Defense, Intelligence and Diplomacy in Washington, D.C.
The forum took place from Feb. 19-24. Dwight, a student at Osbourn Park High School in Woodbridge, Va., joined more than 350 outstanding high school students from across America who demonstrated high academic achievement and an interest in a career related to national security.
The forum was designed to provide a firsthand glimpse of what a career in national security might entail. Students participated in an array of seminars with current leaders key to U.S. international relations.
Dwight, along with other students, participated in national security simulation exercises to test their problem solving skills. These simulation exercises were based on actual world events, which allowed the participants to learn from previous generations of leaders.
The National Youth Leadership Forum is a nonpartisan, nonprofit, educational organization that sponsors highly specialized, career-oriented programs for outstanding high school students who demonstrate leadership potential.
Deborah Howell is chief of staff in the St. Croix unit of the V.I. National Guard; Dennis Howell is a human resources officer.
