PARENT ARRESTED FOR ASSAULTING TEACHER

Jan. 10, 2002 – A St. Thomas woman was in police custody on aggravated assault charges after turning on a Lockhart Elementary School teacher following a fight between two students on the school grounds Thursday afternoon.
Police Chief Novelle Francis Jr. said Carmen Figueroa, 34, was taken into custody about an hour after she struck the unidentified teacher, who had broken up a fight between Figueroa's son and another student. Bail was set at $1,000 for Figueroa after she was formally charged with aggravated assault and battery.
Francis said officers from the School Security Bureau arrested Figueroa less than an hour after police got a call for assistance at Lockhart School, located adjacent to Roy L. Schneider Hospital.
"It was basically a case of the parent turning on the teacher after the minor children engaged in a campus fight," Francis said from his St. Thomas office Thursday. He said Figueroa and the teacher had a discussion before the assault occurred. The teacher was not injured, he said.
