FRENCHTOWN PREPARES FOR COUNTDOWN

Dec. 31, 2001 – They're at it again in Frenchtown. Lionel Olive was putting finishing touches Monday afternoon on lighting for the 30-foot Frenchtown Civic Organization's New Year's pole in advance of the evening's affair.
This is the third year Frenchtown has taken up the New York Times Square countdown tradition by adding the pole to its 50-year-old New Year's celebration.
The first year a bunch of coconuts was dropped from the pole, and last year it was a basket of old wife and yellowtail.
This year is bringing something new, but nobody's saying what. Hint: Like its two predecessors, what will drop at the stroke of midnight can be eaten.
