BIRDIE ON FINAL HOLE GIVES STANCLIFFE VICTORY

It wasn't over until it was over at the weekend's 3rd annual Virgin Islands Amateur Golf Championship at Mahogany Run.
George Marsh held a two-stroke lead in the Men's A Flight going into the final round Sunday, but Conrad Stancliffe shot a three-under-par closing round of 67 to win by a single stroke. The two battled back and forth for the lead until Stancliffe clinched the victory with a birdie on the final hole.
Austin Overby finished third and John Streibich was fourth.
According to a release, a total of 63 players took part in the event, a fund raiser for the V.I. Golf Federation.
Brad Thomas won the Men's Flight B, with William Daniel and Dwight Hendrickson finishing second and third, respectively.
Allison Bourne-Vanneck finished first in the Ladies' Flight, followed by Donna Smith.
In the Senior Flight, Cosmo Williams was the winner, with Frank Smith taking second place.
Low net winners for all flights in the Saturday and Sunday play were Peter Caproni, Dave Coulter, Jeff Hart, Danny Isaac, Julie Law, Bob Lohman, Bill Luppino, Ted Morse, Kim Rice and David Sharp.
At the awards ceremony following the tournament, Hugh Smith Sr. received a lifetime achievement award in recognition of his decades of effort on behalf of golf in the Virgin Islands — as supporter as well as player. Among the contributions cited was his activism "in St. Thomas's early era of golf at the Herman E. Moore golf course on the campus of the University of the Virgin Islands," the release noted.
