NEW $3M POLICE CENTER NEARING COMPLETION

Repairs to the Alexander A. Farrelly Criminal Justice Complex's police division are nearly complete and have cost roughly $3 million.
The 20-year-old complex falls under the authority of its major occupant, the Territorial Court. Glenda Lake, court administrator, said Friday she is hopeful the last of the work — the basement of the police division — will be completed in two to three months. Various police functions and offices moved back into the complex over the past week.
Lake said the interior of the police division had to be demolished and reconstructed.
The $3 million figure includes not only the rebuilding but also the installation of telephones, a security system and air conditioning. She estimated the cost of the remaining work at about $100,000.
The government contracted for the renovations in May 1997. Circle Construction is the general contractor.
Funding came from various special appropriations over the years, from Public Finance Authority bond money and some was "left over" from the original building, Lake said.
