A retrospective exhibition of work by St. Thomas master oil painter Eric Winter is hanging through the end of March at the Haagensen House Museum in downtown Charlotte Amalie.
The 13 oils in the show, painted between 1984 and 1998, are from the private collection of the Thomas Brunt family. The canvases depict the beauty, joy and serenity of West Indian life, the favorite subject matter for Winter, who began painting on St. Thomas in 1954 and died on Jan. 3. Among the works on display are those titled "French Fisherman," "Carnival Village," "The Nap" and "Sea Wall."
The Brunts agreed to collaborate with the museum in mounting the showing of Winter's work so as "to be able to share these wonderful paintings with the community," Thomas Brunt III said. He added, "Haagensen House Museum is the perfect location to exhibit them."
Local artist Rae Kehoe described Winter's works as having "an incredible freshness and gentleness. The colors are so soothing, they are an extension of the artist himself."
Haagensen House is located above Hotel 1829 on Blackbeard's Hill. The exhibition is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission to the museum is $4 for local residents. There is no addition charge to view the Winter exhibition.
