'THE RESCUE' IS NO. 2 ON NY TIMES BEST SELLER LIST

Book Review
"The Rescue"
by Nicholas Sparks
Warner Books, 338 pp., $22.95
"The Rescue" is no. two on the New York Times Best Seller List for Sept. 23. This was its first week on the list.
"The Rescue" begins with a ferocious storm and will make most of us here mutter "Tell me about it!" Listening to the storm trackers frighten us with one hurricane after another as they proceed in an almost conga line across the Atlantic, we are right in the mood to have Nicholas Sparks start his new book with one. The locale is the east coast of N.C.; rain and wind and a car smash-up introduces our hero and heroine to each other and to us in a romantic and dramatic scene.
Books have many faces and personalities, some are deeply thought provoking while others are as light as a hummingbird's flight; this one belongs to the latter category. The main character however, is far from simple, rather he's a very complicated person with many secret forces flowing beneath the surface, most of them painful and convoluted.
There is an endearing child who suffers from a rare speech malady; this is fascinating as so much progress is being made in this field but with miles further to go. An unusual bond is cast by the boy's mother who has dedicated herself to helping him become as normal as he can be. She takes on new vitality and comes alive on the pages as she wrestles with his speech impairment. She spends hours in the library, researching cases like his and what the medical world is saying and doing about them; then comes the hours of therapy as she works directly with him.
It's a small book and can be read in a few evenings. The ways of the heart are explored and if Mr.. Sparks' solutions seem more simple to us than seems probable, one must simply remember that the world has always allowed tellers of love stories a lot of leeway. It's a very pleasant journey through a small town with nice people, it'll leave its readers smiling so park your critical hat on the shelf and enjoy.
