ADOPT-A-SPOT AIMS TO CLEAN UP ISLANDS

Wayne Callwood, acting commissioner of the Department of Public Works, appealed to all Virgin Islands businesses and organizations to help clean up their island by adopting a spot to clean and maintain.
The "Adopt-A-Spot Program" is an effort by Public Works, in conjunction with the Anit-Litter and Beautification Department. Any group that wishes to join the program is asked to call Public Works and identify the spot you would like to maintain. A sign will be posted identifying the patron organization responsible for the cleanup and maintenance.
Public Works will assist in the initial cleanup if necessary, but once the area is cleared and cleaned the adopting organization is responsible to keep it that way. Each participating organization will receive a certificate in appreciation of their contribution.
Recognizing that all residents must do their part to clean up the territory, Call wood said, "Each of us must take great pride in our islands, particularly our roadways. How much we love the Virgin Islands should be reflected in how we keep it clean and attractive."
Callwood also urged property owners to keep their grounds clean and well- maintained, pointing out that according to the law, anyone who owns property or a business in the Virgin Islands must keep sidewalks and frontage safe, decent and litter free. Violators can be fined up to $1,000, imprisoned, or ordered to perform community service.
For more information call Public Works at 774-1301 on St. Thomas, 773-1290 on St. Croix and 776-6346 on St. John.
