FBI JOINS PROBE OF MISSING WESTIN $50,000

The FBI has entered the case of the missing $50,000 from the St. John Westin Resort.
Lt. Joseph Gumbs at the Police Zone D Command in Cruz Bay said that as of Tuesday, "We're getting the assistance of the FBI" in the two and a half-week-old case.
The Westin security supervisor notified police on Aug. 12 that a deposit pouch said to contain about $50,000 had disappeared somewhere between the resort security sign-out desk and the night-deposit chute at the Chase Manhattan Bank branch in Cruz Bay. According to general manager Greg Lundberg, the resort sign-out log showed a guard had taken the pouch from the resort grounds on the night of Aug. 11.
Chase branch manager Esperanza Pickering told police the bank never received the deposit.
Police Investigations Bureau officers have questioned bank employees as well as hotel workers, Gumbs said. He described the entry of the FBI into the investigation now as a routine matter in such cases. The federal agency's involvement makes additional resources available that may help investigators, he said.
