LOCKHART, AURELIEN TAKE EMANCIPATION DAY RUN

Laurence Lockhart III and Sherma Aurelien were victorious in the first running of the Emancipation Day Run Free Mile Road Race.
Lockhart with Jeremy Laurent within striking distance at the half-mile mark, settled into the race and finished comfortably in 4 minutes and 38 seconds. Laurent was second in 5:12 and Kemron Butler third in 5:53; Marvin Mills fourth in 7:00; Milton Francis fifth in 7:06; J'Kiwa Goodwin sixth in 7:08 and Jnuru Goodwin seventh in 7:12.
Aurelien, a member of the St. Croix Educational Complex Track & Field Team, took and early lead but was challenged by Jawana Goodwin for the first half of the race. They finished twelve seconds apart. Aurelien's time for first place was 6:12, Goodwin was second in 6:24; J'Kinde Goodwin was third in 7:08.
The race was part of the program organized by the Frederiksted Emancipation Committee to commemorate the emancipation of slavery in the Danish West Indies. The race finished in the same location the historic event took place 152 years ago.
