ADT DONATES SAFETY PHONES TO ADVOCACY GROUPS

ADT Security Systems has presented two Mobile 911 personal safety devices to each of three domestic violence crisis intervention organizations — Family Resource Center on St. Thomas, The Safety Zone on St. John and The Women's Coalition on St. Croix.
According to ADT customer service manager Allyn Payne, the Mobile 911 looks like a cellular phone with one single large red button, which gives one an immediate connection to a 911 dispatcher.
Since cellular calls to 911 are free, there are no monthly service fees, as there are with a standard cellular phone. The donated devices cannot be used to call any other numbers.
The device, powered by four AAA batteries, also has a 95-decibel alarm signal that can be activated to seek help.
According to Michal Rhymer, executive director of Family Resource Center, "Many of our clients find it difficult to feel safe even at home, fearing their phone lines may be cut. And being on the street presents an even more fearful situation. We are grateful to ADT for helping our clients feel safer."
Safety Zone director Iris Kern said she was glad to be able to supply two clients who are "high risk" for domestic violence with the mobile units. One, she said, "is so relieved to have the 911 phone. . . She feels safer."
Mary Mingus, co-director of the Women's Coalition, said, "We are grateful to ADT for the added safety these phones will give victims."
Payne noted that the devices "are also good for the elderly and the very young." The units retail for $199, she said. For further information, contact ADT at 774-3355.
