UVI HUMANITIES FEST ATTRACTS SCHOLARS, ARTISTS

The following activities will take place this week as part of the University of the Virgin Islands' Humanities Festival 2000: Events are free unless otherwise noted.
Thursday, March 23
• 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., St. Croix schools – "Visiting Scholars Workshop". Novelist Earl Lovelace, acclaimed as the best Caribbean English-speaking writer, Dr. Bert Nepaulsingh, an award-winning scholar, Dr. Clement White, Afro-Hispanic Literature scholar, and filmmaker Gus Edwards travel to three St. Croix schools — Central High School, Educational Complex and Good Hope School — to interact with students about literature and the humanities.
• 11:30 a.m., St. Croix campus – The Hubert Harrison Book Award will be presented
• 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., St. Thomas campus – University Panel, "New Approaches to Transmission and Retention of Culture," in the Ralph M. Paiewonsky Library. An examination of the ways in which technology changes can help to transmit and preserve culture. Panelists include Jennifer Jackson, interim Chancellor of the St. Croix campus and Director of Libraries, and St. Thomas Campus Librarian Linda Barr.
• 6:30 p.m., St. Croix campus – Painters Leo Carty, Elroy Simmonds, Bully Petersen, Karen Samuel, Marie Pierre-Charles and Dove Brathwaite discuss their work in a panel, "The Arts are Alive," in the St. Croix Cafetorium.
• 7:00 p.m., St. Thomas campus – A "Foreign Language Festival" will take place in the cafeteria, featuring Paracumbe, a Puerto Rican folkloric dance company, and musician Salvador Fragosa. General admission is $5.
Friday, March 24
• 9 a.m. – STX campus – V.I. Poetry Roundtable featuring Elaine Jacobs, Louis Ible.
• 10 a.m. – STX campus – Hubert Harrison Award and The Caribbean Writer Award.
• 11 a.m. – STX Panel discussion – "Form and Formula – Teaching Virgin Islands Children Curriculum for the 21st Century." Panelists include Marvin Williams, Gene Emanuel.
• 5:30 p.m. – St. Thomas campus – Roundtable discussion, "Making, Mending and Tending the Net of Humanities Discourse," in Chase Auditorium. Featured panelists include novelist Earl Lovelace, Diasporac scholar James DeJongh and playwright Gus Edwards.
• 8 p.m. – St. Thomas campus. UVI Theatre presents, "Play Mas," a drama by Trinidadian playwright Mustapha Matura, in UVI's Little Theatre, 8 p.m. General admission is $10 and $5 for students. (Through March 27)
Saturday, March 25
• 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. – St. Thomas campus. As part of a day-long Creole Festival on the grounds of UVI on Saturday, there will be an intellectual discussion entitled, "The Narrative Voice and Human Expression." Featured on the panel will be playwright Gus Edwards, Lovelace, Caribbean thinker and literary critic Bert Nepaulsingh, Clement White, James De Jongh, and Professor Opal Palmer Adisa.
• 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. – St. Thomas campus. A series of round-robins in the cafeteria under the heading, "Spinning, Weaving, Cooking and Chanting – the Cross-cultural Narrative of Caribbean Reality." Participants will include novelist Earl Lovelace, international writer Opal Palmer-Adisa and Caribbean scholar Edward Delapine.
• 9 p.m. – St. Thomas campus. Quadrille Ball in the cafeteria featuring Stanley and the Ten Sleepless Nights. Tickets are $15.
Sunday, March 26
4 p.m. to 8 p.m. – St. Thomas campus. "Jazz on the Green" with Martin Lamkin and Friends. On the grounds of UVI's golf course.
