SCHOOLS CLOSED

Although Education Commissioner Ruby Simmonds said Tuesday afternoon that schools would be open Wednesday, Public Relations Director June Archibald called Radio One on Wednesday morning to say several St. Thomas schools were closed and students had been sent home.
There was no answer at the Education Department, but according to Radio One, here are the schools that are closed as of 9 a.m.:
— J. Antonio Jarvis Elementary School
— E. Benjamin Oliver Elementary School
— Kirwin Terrace Elementary School
— Joseph Gomez Elementary School
— Peace Corp. Elementary School
— Bertha C. Boschulte Junior High School
— Charlotte Amalie High School
Teachers walked out of Bertha C. Boschulte last week, angered over reports of pay increases and promotions for a number of government employees in administrative positions.
Teachers and American Federation of Teachers officials promised further action Wednesday to protest pay increases while teachers are owed millions of dollars in back pay.
In the release from her office Tuesday afternoon, Simmonds said she would keep community updated on developments via broadcast media.
