JEEP DRIVER CHARGED WITH VEHICULAR HOMICIDE

The driver of the jeep that smashed into a parked trailer Sunday, killing the passenger, St. Croix firefighter Luis Encarnacion, was charged with vehicular homicide and driving under the influence, according to broadcast reports.
Bail was set at $90,000 for Pie Gilberto, also of St. Croix, Radio One reported.
Gilberto was at the wheel of the red Suzuki Sidekick in which Encarnacion was riding when the vehicle went out of control Sunday afternoon on Veterans Drive, ploughed through a chain-link fence and hit the trailer head-on.
Observers said the jeep was traveling at an excessive rate and had overtaken another vehicle just before it veered off the highway. Encarnacion was killed instantly. Gilberto was taken to Roy L. Schneider Hospital for treatment of severe facial injuries.
