Anyone accustomed to disposing of trash in public receptacles located in several downtown areas will have to change their habits in two more weeks.
In a move aimed at forcing commercial establishments to comply with the law, five trash bins in the Charlotte Amalie area are about to be removed by the Department of Public Works.
The garbage receptacles behind the Enid M. Baa Library, behind the Windward Passage Hotel, across from the Western Cemetery road, near Simmonds Alley and at Heno Corner will be taken away on or about 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 25, according to a Government House press release.
Public Works Assistant Commissioner Wayne D. Callwood said the action is being taken because "there are no residences in these immediate areas." By law, he said, all business establishments are responsible for collecting and disposing of their own waste.
Callwood said "No dumping" signs will be posted, and the joint forces for the Public Works enforcement section and the Police Department will monitor the sites. He urged the public "to cooperate by keeping these historic areas clean and attractive."
