TAXI ORGANIZATIONS PROMISE RUTNIK

The heads of four St. Thomas taxi associations have agreed their cab drivers must pick all passengers regardless of the amount of the fare and the distance.
They met last week with Andrew Rutnik commissioner of Licensing and Consumer Affairs.
The East End Taxi Association, the V.I. Taxi Association, Wheatley Taxi Service and Tours, and Sun Shine Taxi were represented.
The taxi officials agreed to three measures:
– Taxi drivers must pick all passengers when on duty, no matter the size of the fare or the distance.
– The taxi tariff must be posted where all passengers can see it.
– Taxi drivers must have their badges visible at all times.
"The organizations are well prepared to service the community in the absence of gypsies," Rutnik said. "They have promised to monitor their members to ensure that the task force's measures are upheld."
Earlier this month, DLCA formed a task force to crack down on illegal gypsy cabs operating in the territory.
'Our operation seeks to protect our citizenry and ensure service at the same time. We have done that by taking illegal taxis off the road and requiring that the legal taxis pick up all passengers," Rutnik said. "With the organizations making a sincere effort to police their own industry I think we're on our way to solving a long lingering problem."
