BERRY ANNOUNCES WINNING ESSAYS AT YOUTH SYMPOSIUM

Every year for the last eight years Sen. Lorraine Berry has marked Black History month by sponsoring an essay contest. This year the topic was "How Your Decisions on Sex, Violence, and Education Can Affect Your Future." This year the three top winning essays in two categories, high school and junior high school, can be found in the Community/Schools section of St. Thomas Source.
In her presentation Monday at her annual Youth Symposium, Berry told the students she had selected the topic to reflect the present reality of Virgin Islands youth.
"Your generation is confronted with ten times more problems than my generation," Berry said
"Years ago it used to be teachers who beat students when the students misbehaved. Today misbehaving students beat their teachers," she said.
For the students' eye view of the world they live in and the issues they face, go to the Community/Schools section of St. Thomas Source.
