Two modular units have arrived on St. Thomas and two units will soon arrive on St. Croix as temporary office space for the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). Offices in both districts were significantly damaged by hurricanes Irma and Maria.
On St. Thomas, one of the modular units will be used for the renewal of and new applications for driver’s licenses, while the other unit will be used as a testing area. These units are scheduled to begin operation in late May.
“Our goal is to restore normalcy to the BMV’s operations and serve the people of the territory. I am excited that the modular units are on site and will soon be outfitted to meet the community’s needs,” said BMV Director Lawrence Olive.
Olive plans to implement many new changes to the BMV, including securing and streamlining the vehicle registration and driver’s license process and becoming 100 percent compliant with the Real ID Act by November 2018.
The long-term plan is to rebuild the St. Thomas and St. Croix offices in new locations, next to the SFC Leonard B. Francis Armory on St. Thomas and in an area between the University of the Virgin Islands, Albert Sheen Campus and the Golden Grove Correctional Facility on St. Croix.
