‘Shining Stars’ Honored at High Achievers Celebration

Students representing all public schools in the St. Croix District braved the inclement weather on Sunday, Jan. 17, to claim their medals as the “Shining Stars” during the second annual High Achievers Celebration organized by Winona Sackey-Joshua, district director of the Office of Data and Assessment. The proud students, gathered at the John H. Woodson Junior High School Auditorium, were among 161 who performed at the 80th percentile and above on the 2009 VITAL-S or VITAL-A9.

St. Croix academic Shining Stars also received certificates, prizes and lots of praise from well-wishers, including Gov. John P. deJongh Jr., Commissioner of Education La Verne Terry, St. Croix Superintendent Gary Molloy and V.I. Board of Education Chairperson Winona A. Hendricks.
The district’s high academic achievers lit their star-shaped candles and raised them high to signify their brilliance in the academics. Sackey-Joshua, along with husband Beaugeste sang a tribute titled “I Pledge Allegiance”to the students to bring the ceremony to a memorable closing.
