Oct. 13, 2003 – The 19th annual West Indies Lab/V.I. Pace Runners five-mile road race is set for Saturday beginning at 6 a.m. in Teague Bay on East End Road at the entrance to the St Croix Yacht Club and the former West Indies Laboratory.
This year's race is a tribute to Elizabeth "Betsy" and her husband, Bill Gladfelter, "scientists and endurance athletes who have made significant contributions to the Virgin Islands, and St. Croix in particular, as experts in their scientific fields and as long-distance runners, cyclists and triathletes," a release from V.I. Pace states.
Betsy Gladfelter was the director of the West Indies Lab. The Gladfelters returned to St. Croix in August, when she lectured on the bird habitat at Southgate Pond. The couple were among scientists of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute commissioned by the St. Croix Environmental Association to study the area in preparation for the formulation of a management plan for a nature preserve on 100 acres there donated to SEA.
Saturday's race is open to runners of all levels. For more information call 777-0258 or visit the V.I. Pace Web site.
