Oct. 28, 2003 – The home teams took the trophies in last weekend's 12th annual Ocean Spray Volleyball Classic girls' tournament held in the Mark C. Marin Center on the Antilles School campus on St. Thomas.
Play began on Friday afternoon for 14 varsity and junior varsity girls' teams from St. Thomas and St. Croix.
In the varsity championship finals on Sunday, the Central Caribs earned the third-place position by defeating Education Complex, which finished fourth. In the final match, the Charlotte Amalie Chickenhawks took on their archrivals and the defending champion, the Antilles Hurricanes.
Winning the first set, 25-19, the Hurricanes seemed confident, but they then lost the second set to CAHS, 20-25. Antilles pulled off a close victory, 25-23, for the third set, then dominated the fourth and final set, finishing 25-21. The Hurricanes' Rachel Gargano was named varsity Most Valuable Player.
In the junior varsity finals, All Saints captured third place, leaving the Antilles 'Canes to battle the Central Caribs for the championship. It was a very close contest, spanning five sets, but in the end Antilles prevailed, as the local crowd went wild with every spike and every save as well. Antilles' Nicole Wheatley was named the junior varsity MVP. When asked what gave his varsity team the edge, Antilles coach Zach Caiger-Greaves said: "We just got back from Puerto Rico, which was really great practice." He praised his players, saying that "the girls have been working really hard. They deserved this."
